What is SIM rotation? SIM rotation is the practice of toggling airplane mode on a cellular-equipped device between social media account sessions, forcing the mobile carrier to reassign a fresh IP address before the next session begins. Each account operates from a distinct mobile IP, preventing cross-account IP correlation without requiring paid proxy infrastructure.
What It Means
Mobile carriers dynamically assign IP addresses to cellular devices from a shared pool. When a device disconnects from the network (via airplane mode or physical restart), the carrier reassigns a new IP on reconnection. This natural rotation is invisible to end users but can be exploited to produce per-session IP isolation for automation.
Why It Matters for Multi-Account Automation
Multi-account operations require per-account network isolation to prevent IP correlation. The traditional solution is residential proxies, which cost $3–15 per IP per month and compound rapidly at scale. SIM rotation produces equivalent isolation using the device’s own cellular connection at a fraction of the ongoing cost.
Mobile IPs are also the highest-trust proxy class available. Because mobile carrier IPs are shared across thousands of legitimate users, platforms cannot flag actions from mobile IPs without producing false positives on real users. This makes SIM rotation both cheaper and more trusted than residential proxy alternatives.
How It Works Operationally
The automation tool executes actions for Account A. When Account A’s session completes, the tool toggles airplane mode on the device, waits a few seconds for the carrier to acknowledge disconnection, and toggles airplane mode off. The carrier assigns a fresh mobile IP on reconnection. The tool then begins Account B’s session from the new IP. Repeating this pattern across all accounts on the device produces per-account IP isolation without any external infrastructure.
