How to Grow on Threads in 2026: What Actually Gets You Reach
You grow on Threads by starting conversations and joining other people's, not by polishing posts. Meta's own description of the For You feed is built around predicting whether someone will reply, like, open your profile or scroll past, and the head of Instagram has said that if you want to grow, you should reply much more than you post. Post often, post fresh, tag one topic, and spend as much time in other people's replies as in your own posts.
This post is for creators, brands and agencies trying to get Threads accounts past the first few hundred followers. If your reach has dropped rather than stalled, start with Am I shadowbanned on Threads? instead.
How does the Threads algorithm decide what to show?
Threads has two feeds. Following shows only accounts you follow, newest first. For You is ranked by an AI system, and that's where new followers come from.
Meta's Threads feed system card lists what the ranking predicts for each viewer and each post, including:
- how likely you are to like it
- how likely you are to reply to it
- how likely you are to open the author's profile
- how likely you are to scroll past without engaging
- how long you'll spend viewing it
Look at what's on that list. Replies, profile visits and time spent all count, and scrolling past counts against you. A post that gets people talking does better than a post that only gets a quick like.
Threads favours what's happening now. Adam Mosseri told Platformer in 2024 that Threads focuses "way more on real time" in its ranking than Instagram does. A post's first hour matters, and an old post rarely comes back.
Why do replies matter so much on Threads?
Because they're half the game. In the same interview, Mosseri said that if you're trying to grow, "you should reply much more than you post", and that the value of all your replies adds up to about as much as the value of all your posts.
Replies work two ways:
Replying on your own posts keeps the conversation going. Every reply you get and answer is another signal that the post is worth showing.
Replying on other people's posts puts you in front of their audience. A sharp reply under a big account's post can bring more profile visits than your own post that day.
Answer early. The first hour is when a post is being tested, so be around to reply when it goes out.
Add something. "Great point" doesn't make anyone open your profile. A short opinion, a number or a question does.
Reply where your audience already is. Pick 10 to 20 accounts in your niche and be a regular in their replies.
What should you post on Threads?
Text that starts a conversation. Threads is a text-first app, and the posts that travel are the ones people want to answer.
- Opinions and takes that people can agree or disagree with.
- Questions your audience can answer from their own experience.
- Short lessons from something you did, with the real numbers.
- Behind-the-scenes posts: what you're working on, what went wrong.
- Images when they add something, not as decoration.
Avoid posts that read like ads. A feed of links and promotion gives nobody a reason to reply, and replies are what the ranking is looking for.
How do topics work on Threads?
You can tag one topic per post, by tapping # in the composer or typing # and a word. Meta's help centre explains how to tag a topic: topics can be up to 50 characters and can include spaces.
The topic helps people who follow that subject find your post. Since you only get one, pick the narrowest topic that fits. "Email marketing" reaches the right people better than "marketing".
How often should you post on Threads?
More often than on Instagram. Because Threads leans towards what's new, a post has a short life, and accounts that grow tend to post daily.
A sensible rhythm:
- One to three posts a day, spread out, not back to back.
- Replies on top of that, every day, on your posts and other people's.
- Consistency over bursts. Ten posts in an hour and then nothing for three days looks less human and reaches fewer people than one or two a day, every day.
Does your Instagram account affect Threads?
Yes. A Threads profile is tied to an Instagram account, so an existing Instagram audience is the easiest place to find your first Threads followers. Mention the Threads account on Instagram and give people a reason to follow it there too.
It works the other way too. Account standing is shared, so a problem on the Instagram account can drag the Threads account down. If you're growing both, look after both.
What stops Threads accounts from growing?
Usually one of these:
Posting and leaving. No replies to your own comments, no replies elsewhere. It's the most common reason a decent account stays small.
Posting in bursts. A day of ten posts followed by silence.
The same post on several accounts. Identical text across profiles is easy to connect, and it gets the accounts treated as one.
Link-only posts. A feed that exists to send people off Threads.
Cross-posts from Instagram. Captions written for Instagram, hashtags and all, read as an afterthought on Threads.
If reach was fine and then suddenly collapsed, that's a different problem. See Am I shadowbanned on Threads?.
How do you grow several Threads accounts at once?
Give each account its own voice, its own schedule and its own replies, and automate only the parts that don't need a person.
Onimator is software that drives the real Threads app on Android phones, cloud phones and emulators. For Threads growth, it covers the repetitive work:
| Task | Where | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled posts, with AI captions from each account's own prompt | Posts tab | Spread posts through each account's active hours |
| Browsing the feed between actions | Scroll Feed | On every account, 5 to 12 posts per session on new accounts |
| Likes while scrolling | Scroll Feed | 20 to 40%, 10 to 20% on new accounts |
| Following people in your niche | Follow | Start low and let auto-increment raise it |
| Active hours per account | Timer tab | A realistic window, different for each account |
| Copying settings and splitting targets across accounts | Threads Manager | One reference account, copied to the rest |
These are ceilings, not targets. Keep the replies human. They're the part of Threads growth that matters most, and the part that's hardest to fake.
Write for each account. Different angles and wording on every profile.
Run Scroll Feed alone for a few days on new accounts before turning Follow on.
One stable IP per account. See mobile vs residential vs datacenter proxies.
Meta's terms don't allow automated use of its apps without permission. Automation on Threads carries risk, and nothing here removes it. Our post on Threads automation in 2026 covers that side in more depth.
FAQ
How do I get more followers on Threads?
Post daily, start conversations, and reply a lot, both on your own posts and on bigger accounts in your niche. Replies bring profile visits, and profile visits bring followers.
How does the Threads algorithm work?
The For You feed is ranked by an AI system that predicts how likely each viewer is to like a post, reply to it, open the author's profile or scroll past. It also favours recent posts more than Instagram does.
How often should I post on Threads?
One to three times a day works for most growing accounts, plus daily replies. Steady posting beats bursts.
Do hashtags work on Threads?
Threads uses topics instead. You can tag one topic per post, and it helps people interested in that subject find you. Pick the narrowest one that fits.
Why is my Threads account not growing?
Most often because the account posts and leaves without replying, posts in bursts, or mostly shares links. If reach dropped suddenly, check Account Status for a shadowban.
