Am I Shadowbanned on Threads? Checking Account Status and Getting Your Reach Back

A Threads shadowban is when your posts stop reaching people who don't already follow you, while your account keeps working as normal. Followers still see you. The For You feed, search and suggestions stop showing you to anyone new. Unlike Tinder or Bumble, Threads gives you a place to check part of it yourself.

This post is for people running Threads accounts for growth: creators, agencies and teams posting across several profiles. If you've read our Tinder or Bumble posts, the difference here is that Threads is a public feed, so the damage shows up as lost reach, not missing matches.

What is a Threads shadowban?

It's reduced distribution. Meta doesn't use the word "shadowban", but it does decide which posts are eligible to be recommended to people who don't follow you. When an account or its posts fall outside those rules, they stop being pushed to new people.

That's why it feels invisible. Your posts publish. Your followers can see them. Replies from people who already know you keep coming. What vanishes is the stranger traffic, which on Threads is most of the growth.

"Shadowban" is a user term. Meta describes it as content not being recommended, and that's the language you'll see inside the app. Our glossary has the general definition of a shadowban.

How do you check if you're shadowbanned on Threads?

Start with Account Status, because it's the only check that comes from Meta itself.

  1. Open Threads and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu, then Settings → Account → Account Status.
  3. Look for anything flagged: removed posts, violations, or a note about whether your content can be recommended.

Meta's help centre has a page on how to check your Threads Account Status. Threads also shares account standing with the linked Instagram account, so a problem on Instagram can show up here too.

A clean Account Status doesn't prove you're fine. It shows violations and recommendation problems Meta chooses to surface. Reach can still drop for reasons it never lists, so back it up with the checks below.

What are the signs of a Threads shadowban?

The clearest sign is a split between followers and everyone else. Reach from followers holds steady, reach from non-followers collapses.

  • Views drop sharply overnight on posts that would normally travel.
  • Replies only come from people you already know. New names stop appearing.
  • Your posts don't show up in search or under topics when someone who doesn't follow you looks.
  • Follower growth stalls even though you're posting as much as before.

Give it a week before deciding. One quiet post means nothing. A week of posts that never reach anyone new is the pattern.

How do you test it without Account Status?

Ask someone who doesn't follow you to look.

  1. Search test. They search for your username and a phrase from a recent post. If your post never appears, you're not being surfaced.
  2. Feed test. They scroll their For You feed in your niche for a while. If none of your posts ever turn up while similar accounts do, that's a signal.
  3. Before and after. Compare views on your last seven posts with the seven before. A steep drop across most of them, with nothing changed in what you post, points at the account rather than the content.

What causes a Threads shadowban?

Anything that looks like spam, inauthentic behaviour or content Meta won't recommend. For people running several accounts, it's usually one of these:

Posting in bursts. Ten posts in an hour, then silence, doesn't look like a person.

The same post on many accounts. Identical text going out across a set of profiles is one of the easiest patterns to connect.

Aggressive follow and unfollow. Following hundreds of people and dropping them days later is classic growth-hack behaviour, and it gets caught.

Repetitive replies. The same reply under dozens of posts reads as spam, however friendly it is.

Links and self-promotion in every post. A feed that only exists to push people off the platform is exactly what recommendation rules filter out.

Accounts that look connected. Shared IPs, shared devices or shared content make a set of accounts look like one operator. When one is flagged, the others tend to follow, the same way a ban wave works.

Meta's terms don't allow automated use of its apps without permission. Any automation on Threads carries risk, and nothing in this post removes it. What you control is how much risk you take on.

How do you get your reach back?

Stop whatever triggered it, then give the account time. Reduced distribution usually isn't something you appeal. It clears once the account stops behaving the way that caused it.

  1. Check Account Status first. If a post is flagged, remove it or request a review there. That's the one part you can act on directly.
  2. Pause the risky activity for a week. No follow bursts, no mass replies, no links.
  3. Post fewer, better posts. One or two a day, written for Threads, not copied from another platform or another account.
  4. Drop the repeated content. If the same post went out on several accounts, delete the copies.
  5. Restart slowly. Bring follows and replies back at low volume and build up over a couple of weeks.

Most accounts recover within one to four weeks of clean behaviour. If reach is still flat after a month, look for something you missed, usually a shared IP or content that's still duplicated across accounts.

How do you avoid it when running several Threads accounts?

Make each account behave like one person, and keep the accounts from looking like each other.

Onimator is software that drives the real Threads app on Android phones, cloud phones and emulators. These are the defaults its Threads guides recommend:

Setting Recommended Why
Follow daily limit Start low and let auto-increment add about 5 a day A new account ramps instead of jumping to full volume
Unfollow daily limit Match the follow limit, 10 to 15 a day on new accounts Keeps the following count from climbing forever
Unfollow ceiling Don't push past 50 a day Bursting unfollows looks as automated as bursting follows
Scroll Feed per session 5 to 12 posts on new accounts, 10 to 20 once warmed Adds ordinary browsing between real actions
Pause while scrolling 5 to 15 seconds per post, random Real people stop to read
Likes while scrolling Around 15% of scrolled posts Never liking everything

Where these live: the Follow, Unfollow and Scroll Feed guides cover the numbers, the Posts tab covers scheduled posting, and the Timer tab sets each account's active hours.

A few habits matter as much as the numbers:

Write for each account. Different angles, different wording. Posting the same text on ten profiles is the fastest way to get them treated as one.

Spread posts through the day. A schedule with gaps looks like a person. Ten posts at 9am looks like a tool.

One stable IP per account. See mobile vs residential vs datacenter proxies for why sticky mobile IPs hold up best.

Watch the linked Instagram account. Account standing is shared, so an Instagram problem can drag Threads down with it.

FAQ

Does Threads shadowban accounts?

Meta doesn't use the word, but it does limit which accounts and posts get recommended to people who don't follow you. When that happens your posts still publish, they just stop reaching anyone new.

How do I check if I'm shadowbanned on Threads?

Go to Settings → Account → Account Status in the Threads app and look for flagged posts or recommendation problems. Then ask someone who doesn't follow you to search for your posts and check whether they appear.

How long does a Threads shadowban last?

Usually one to four weeks after you stop the behaviour that caused it. There's no fixed length, and it doesn't lift while the trigger keeps happening.

Can I appeal a Threads shadowban?

You can request a review of posts flagged in Account Status. Reduced reach on its own usually has no appeal. It clears when the account's behaviour changes.

Not on its own, but a feed that's mostly links and promotion is the kind of content that stops being recommended. Mix links in with posts that stand on their own.
