Reddit Account Suspended? What It Means and How to Appeal

A suspended Reddit account can still log in and browse, but it can't post, comment, vote, send chats or report anything until the suspension ends. Reddit now calls these sitewide bans, and they come in two kinds: temporary, which usually lasts 3 or 7 days and ends on its own, and permanent, which only ends if an appeal succeeds. You can appeal either one at reddit.com/appeals, logged in to the affected account, within six months of the action.

This post covers what each kind of suspension means, how to tell it apart from a shadowban or a subreddit ban, how to appeal, and how to keep the accounts you run from getting there.

What does it mean when your Reddit account is suspended?

It means Reddit took action against the whole account, not just one post. According to Reddit's help centre, a banned account loses the ability to:

  • vote
  • post and comment
  • send chats
  • report content

You can still browse and read. You can also delete your own posts and comments while banned, and edit them again once the ban ends.

If you moderate a community, you lose that too. For as long as the ban lasts, you can't approve or remove content or open mod mail.

For a ban under Reddit's rules, you'll get an inbox message saying what you did, what action was taken and how to appeal. Bans for spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion don't always come with a message.

Is it temporary or permanent?

Reddit usually escalates in steps: a warning first, then a 3-day ban, then a 7-day ban, then a permanent ban. Serious violations can skip straight to the end.

Temporary ban Permanent ban
How long A set number of days, often 3 or 7 No end date
Your profile Looks unchanged to everyone else Shows as banned
What ends it Time runs out, or an appeal succeeds Only a successful appeal
Common causes A first or second rule break Repeat breaks, spam, ban evasion

A temporary ban doesn't change your profile, so other people won't know you were banned. The inbox message tells you how long it lasts.

Is it a suspension, a shadowban or a subreddit ban?

These three look alike from the inside, but each has its own fix.

Sitewide ban (suspension) Shadowban Subreddit ban
Do you get told? Usually, in your inbox Usually not Yes, a chat from the mods
What you can do Browse only Post, but nobody sees it Everything, except in that community
Who did it Reddit Reddit's spam systems That community's moderators
How to fix it Appeal to Reddit Appeal to Reddit Message that community's mods

If you can still post but your profile disappears when you're logged out, that's a spam flag. We covered how to check it in am I shadowbanned on Reddit?. If only one community removed you, Reddit's appeal form won't help. That's up to that community's mods.

Why do Reddit accounts get suspended?

Because the account broke one of Reddit's Rules, or looked like it was spamming. For people running accounts for growth, it's usually one of these:

Spam and repeat posting. The same link or text across many communities, or an account that only ever posts its own links.

Vote manipulation. Several accounts upvoting the same posts, or each other.

Ban evasion. Using a new account to get around a ban on an old one, whether sitewide or in a single community. Reddit treats this as a violation of its own.

Accounts that look connected. If one account gets banned for spam, others on the same IP or device can get pulled in with it. Reddit's appeal form has an option for exactly this: reporting that your account was wrongly associated with other banned accounts. See why Reddit accounts get banned together.

Harassment and content violations. Things like abuse, threats or posting banned content, which usually earn a warning or a temporary ban first.

How do you appeal a Reddit suspension?

Use Reddit's appeal form once, and keep it short.

  1. Log in to the suspended account in a browser. The appeal option only shows up for the affected account.
  2. Open reddit.com/appeals, or follow the link in the inbox message if you got one.
  3. Pick the action you're appealing. If you think you were banned because of other accounts, say so in the form.
  4. Explain in two or three sentences why you think it was a mistake and what the account is for. Stay calm and stick to facts.
  5. Wait, and don't send it again. More appeals don't make it any faster.

Reddit accepts appeals for up to six months after the action. Appeals sent through the general support request form aren't processed, so always use the appeals page.

Can't log in at all? If the account says it's disabled or locked, you can't reach the appeal form. Use Reddit's support request form to ask about the account's status instead.

How long does a Reddit appeal take?

Reddit doesn't publish a time. Some people hear back in a few days, and others wait weeks or never get a reply. A temporary ban often runs out before the appeal is reviewed, so for a short ban the practical move is usually to wait it out and come back carefully.

Don't make a new account while you wait. That's ban evasion. Reddit treats it as a separate violation, and a new account on the same device and IP usually gets linked to the old one.

What should you do when a temporary ban ends?

Come back slowly, the way you would with a new account.

  • Read the inbox message again and stop whatever caused the ban.
  • Start with comments and upvotes in communities you already use, before posting links.
  • Keep volume low for a week or two. A second ban is usually longer than the first.
  • Check the account logged out now and then, in case it has also been flagged for spam.

How do you keep Reddit accounts from getting suspended?

Make each account behave like one real person who uses Reddit, and keep your accounts from looking like each other.

Onimator is software that drives the real Reddit app on Android phones, cloud phones and emulators. These settings from its Reddit guides cover the most common causes:

Setting What it does Where
Daily upvote limits and upvotes per source Keeps votes low and spread out, never everything one person posted Upvote guide
Daily comment limits and delays Low comment volume with time to read before replying Comment Feeds guide
Post scheduling for each account One post written for one community, not the same post everywhere Post guide
Active hours Each account works in a realistic window, not around the clock Timer guide

These are ceilings, not targets. A few habits matter as much as the settings:

Build karma before posting links. See the Reddit karma trap.

Never have your accounts upvote each other. It's the clearest form of vote manipulation.

One stable IP per account. See mobile vs residential vs datacenter proxies.

Pause an account the moment it gets a warning. Warnings come before bans, so treat one as a chance to slow down.

Reddit's rules don't allow spam, vote manipulation or ban evasion, and automation carries risk. Nothing here removes that risk. What you control is how natural each account's activity looks.

FAQ

What happens when your Reddit account is suspended?

You can still log in and browse, but you can't post, comment, vote, send chats or report content. If you moderate a community, you also lose mod tools and mod mail until the ban ends.

How long does a Reddit suspension last?

A temporary ban usually lasts 3 or 7 days, and the inbox message says exactly how long. A permanent ban has no end date and only ends if an appeal succeeds.

How do I appeal a Reddit suspension?

Log in to the suspended account in a browser, go to reddit.com/appeals, and submit the form once with a short, factual explanation. You have six months from the action to appeal.

Can I make a new Reddit account if I'm suspended?

No. Making a new account to get around a ban is ban evasion, which Reddit treats as its own violation. It usually gets the new account banned too.

Is a Reddit suspension the same as a shadowban?

No. A suspension usually comes with a message and stops you posting. A shadowban usually comes with no message: you can still post, but nobody else sees it. Both are appealed through reddit.com/appeals.
