Am I Shadowbanned on Reddit? How to Check, Appeal and Avoid It

A Reddit shadowban is when your account keeps working for you, but nobody else can see what you post. Your comments and posts publish, your profile loads when you're logged in, and nothing tells you anything is wrong. Logged out, your profile is gone and your posts never appear. Reddit calls this being flagged for spam or inauthentic activity.

This post is for people running Reddit accounts for growth: creators, agencies and teams working across several profiles. If you've read our Threads, Tinder or Bumble posts, Reddit is the easiest of the four to check, and the only one with a proper appeal form.

What is a Reddit shadowban?

It's a site-wide spam flag. Reddit's help centre says that if your posts, comments, chat messages and profile page aren't showing up as expected, your account may have been flagged for spam or inauthentic activity. That's what people mean by a Reddit shadowban.

Reddit replaced most shadowbans with visible suspensions back in 2015, when it decided rule-breakers should know they'd been actioned. The quiet version stayed for spam and bot activity, which is exactly the kind of account Reddit doesn't want to warn.

A shadowban isn't a suspension. A suspended account gets a message and goes read-only. A shadowbanned account usually gets no message and can still post. It just isn't seen. Our glossary has the general definition of a shadowban.

How do you check if you're shadowbanned on Reddit?

It takes a minute, and you don't need any tools.

  1. Open your profile logged out. Use a private window and go to reddit.com/user/yourusername. If it says the page isn't found, while it loads fine when you're logged in, the account is shadowbanned.
  2. Check the appeals page. Log in and open reddit.com/appeals. Accounts with a site-wide action on them see it there.
  3. Look at one of your recent comments logged out. Open the thread in a private window. If your comment is missing while everyone else's shows, it's being hidden.

Some people post in r/ShadowBan, where a bot replies with the account's status. It's community-run, so treat it as a second opinion, not Reddit's answer.

One missing post doesn't mean a shadowban. If your profile loads fine logged out but a post is missing from a subreddit, that's a removal by that community, not a site-wide flag.

Is it a shadowban or just a subreddit removal?

Most "shadowbans" people complain about are really subreddit removals. They look similar from the inside, but they're different problems.

Site-wide shadowban Subreddit removal
Profile logged out Page not found Loads normally
Affects Everything you post, everywhere Posts in one community
Who did it Reddit's spam systems That subreddit's mods or AutoModerator
How to fix Appeal to Reddit Read the rules, ask the mods, build karma

Subreddit removals usually come from karma or account-age minimums, missing flair, or AutoModerator rules. We covered those in why half your Reddit posts never reach the subreddit.

What causes a Reddit shadowban?

Anything Reddit's systems read as spam. Reddit defines spam as repeated or unsolicited actions, automated or manual, that hurt users or communities. For people running several accounts, it's usually one of these:

Posting the same thing in many places. The same link or the same text across several subreddits is the textbook spam pattern.

Self-promotion with nothing else. An account whose history is mostly its own links doesn't look like a member of any community.

Vote manipulation. Several of your accounts upvoting the same posts, or each other, is one of the things Reddit looks for hardest.

Too much, too soon. A brand-new account commenting dozens of times on day one looks like what it usually is.

Accounts that look connected. Shared IPs, shared devices or the same posting pattern tie accounts together. When one is flagged, the others tend to follow. See why Reddit accounts get banned together.

Reddit's rules don't allow spam or vote manipulation, and automation carries risk. Nothing in this post removes that risk. What you control is how much of it you take on.

How do you appeal a Reddit shadowban?

Use the form, once, and keep it short.

  1. Log in to the affected account in a browser.
  2. Go to reddit.com/appeals and fill in the form.
  3. Say what you were really doing. Two or three plain sentences: that you believe the account was flagged in error, what you use it for, and that you've stopped anything that could look automated.
  4. Wait, and don't send it again. Repeat appeals don't speed anything up.

Reddit gives you six months from the action to appeal, according to its content moderation and appeals page.

Don't make a new account to get around it. Creating accounts to get around a ban is ban evasion, which Reddit treats as its own violation, and a new account on the same device and IP usually ends up flagged too.

How do you avoid it when running several Reddit accounts?

Make each account behave like one person who actually uses Reddit, and keep the accounts from looking like each other.

Onimator is software that drives the real Reddit app on Android phones, cloud phones and emulators. These are the defaults from its Reddit guides:

Setting Default Why
Feed upvotes per day 15 Ordinary browsing, not a vote bot
Targeted upvotes per day 20 Upvotes on usernames and subreddits stay low
Upvotes per source per session 3 Never everything one person posted
Feed comments per day 15, start around 8 Comments are the riskiest action on Reddit
Delay per comment 3 to 6 seconds, 5 to 10 on new accounts Time to read before replying
Active hours A realistic window, such as 8:00 to 22:00 Accounts that never sleep stand out

Where these live: the Upvote, Comment Feeds, Post and Timer guides cover each one. These are ceilings, not targets.

A few habits matter as much as the numbers:

Build karma before you post links. New accounts with no history are filtered by many communities anyway. Our post on the Reddit karma trap explains why.

One post, one community. Write each post for the subreddit it's going to, never the same post in five places.

Never point your accounts at each other. No upvoting your own accounts' posts from the rest of the fleet.

One stable IP per account. See mobile vs residential vs datacenter proxies for why sticky mobile IPs hold up best.

Check accounts logged out now and then. A shadowban is silent, so the only way to catch it early is to look.

FAQ

How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on Reddit?

Open your profile in a private window while logged out. If Reddit says the page isn't found, but it loads when you're logged in, the account has been flagged. You can also log in and check reddit.com/appeals.

Does Reddit still shadowban accounts?

Yes, for spam and inauthentic activity. Reddit moved most rule-breaking to visible suspensions in 2015, but accounts flagged for spam can still have their posts and profile hidden without a message.

How long does a Reddit shadowban last?

There's no fixed length. A site-wide spam flag usually stays until Reddit reviews an appeal, so file one rather than waiting it out.

Can I appeal a Reddit shadowban?

Yes. Log in to the affected account, go to reddit.com/appeals and submit the form. Reddit accepts appeals for up to six months after the action.

Is my post removed or am I shadowbanned?

If your profile loads normally when you're logged out, you're not shadowbanned. A post missing from one subreddit was removed by that community's moderators or its AutoModerator rules.
