Snapchat Account Locked? Why It Happens and How to Unlock It
A locked Snapchat account is either temporarily locked, which you can usually undo yourself after a waiting period, or permanently locked for breaking Snap's rules, which only an appeal can reverse. Most temporary locks come from unauthorized third-party apps, suspicious activity like adding too many friends too fast, or a login that looks compromised. The message you see when you try to log in tells you which kind you have.
This post is for anyone whose Snapchat account just locked, and for teams running several accounts who want to stop it happening again.
What does it mean when a Snapchat account is locked?
It means Snap has stopped the account from logging in. According to Snapchat Support, there are two kinds:
Temporary lock. The account still exists and comes back after a waiting period. Snap uses it for unauthorized app use, unusual activity, and accounts that might be compromised, which are locked "just to be safe".
Permanent lock. The account was locked for violating Snap's Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. You can't unlock it yourself. Some accounts can appeal once, and that's it.
Your data isn't gone either way. Even while locked, you can download your data at accounts.snapchat.com under My Data.
Why did my Snapchat account get locked?
Snap doesn't always say, but these are the usual causes:
Unauthorized third-party apps. Snap's Terms forbid apps and plugins that log in with your username and password. Its help centre names examples such as Snapchat++, SnapEnhance, Phantom and Sneakaboo, and it lists emulators among them too.
Adding too many friends too fast. Mass friend-adding is the most common spam pattern on Snapchat, and a burst of adds, especially from a new account, gets flagged.
Spam-like messaging. The same opener sent to dozens of people looks like a bot, whoever sent it.
A login that looks compromised. A sign-in from an unusual device or location can trigger a protective lock.
Breaking the Community Guidelines. Harassment, scams, explicit content where it isn't allowed and similar violations lead to permanent locks.
A device ban. Snap mentions device-level bans with error codes such as SS06, SS07 and SS18. Those are permanent locks tied to the phone, not just the account.
How do you unlock a temporarily locked Snapchat account?
Wait out the lock, clean up whatever caused it, then unlock it yourself.
- Read the lock message. For third-party app locks, Snap tells you in the app or by email how long the lock lasts. For other temporary locks, Snap says to wait 48 hours.
- Remove every unauthorized app or plugin, and update Snapchat to the latest version from the official app store.
- Change your password, especially if you'd entered it into a third-party app.
- Go to accounts.snapchat.com and select Unlock once the waiting period is over.
Don't keep retrying the login during the lock. Repeated attempts don't shorten it. Snap also warns that logging in can stay difficult for a while even after you delete an unauthorized app.
Ignore anyone offering to unlock your account. Snap says the only legitimate ways are doing it yourself or appealing through the Snapchat app.
How do you appeal a permanently locked account?
Only through the app, and only once.
- Open Snapchat and try to log in.
- If the account is eligible, you'll see an Appeal Decision pop-up. Tap it.
- Explain briefly why you think the lock was a mistake and submit.
Snap's appeal page says reviews can take up to 30 days, and you'll hear back in the app or by email. If the appeal is denied, you can't submit another one.
If there's no Appeal Decision pop-up, the account isn't eligible, and it can't be unlocked.
How do you stop Snapchat accounts from getting locked?
Use the official app only, add friends slowly, and give every account a normal daily rhythm.
Onimator is software that drives the official Snapchat app on Android phones and cloud phones, the same app a person taps through. These are the starting points from its Snapchat guides:
| Setting | New accounts | Warmed accounts |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Adds per day | 10–15 | 20–25 |
| Delay between adds | 5–10 minutes | 4–6 minutes |
| Adds per session | 1–3 | 2–5 |
| Messages per day | 10–15 | 20–30 |
| Accepting friend requests per day | 15–25 | 25–50 |
| Active hours | A realistic window, such as 08:00–23:00 | Same |
Where these live: the Quick Adds, Messaging, Accept Friends and Timer guides. These are ceilings, not targets. How Quick Add itself works is covered in how does Snapchat Quick Add work.
A few habits matter as much as the numbers:
Run Snapchat on real phones or cloud phones. Snap lists emulators among unauthorized apps, so Snapchat accounts are safer on real Android hardware. See real phone vs cloud phone vs emulator.
Verify the email and phone number on every account before it starts adding people.
Accept before you add. Accepting incoming requests is low-risk. Adding strangers is where accounts get flagged, so keep that the slowest part.
Vary every opener. The same first message to everyone is a spam signal. Our post on why Snapchat DMs aren't landing covers what works instead.
Never run accounts 24/7. A sleeping window is part of looking like a person.
Keep each account's identity consistent: one device, one location, one IP. See safe identity modeling for Snapchat.
Snap's Terms don't allow automated use of its services. Any automation carries risk, and nothing in this post removes it. What you control is how much each account looks like a person using Snapchat.
FAQ
How long does a Snapchat temporary lock last?
It depends on the reason. For unauthorized third-party apps, the lock message or email tells you how long. For other temporary locks, Snap says to wait 48 hours before trying to log in again.
How do I unlock my Snapchat account?
If it's temporarily locked, remove any third-party apps, update Snapchat, wait out the lock, then go to accounts.snapchat.com and select Unlock.
Can a permanently locked Snapchat account be recovered?
Only through an appeal in the Snapchat app, if the account is eligible. You can appeal once, and reviews can take up to 30 days.
Can using an emulator get my Snapchat locked?
It can. Snap lists emulators among the unauthorized apps that break its Terms of Service, so running Snapchat on one risks a lock.
Why does Snapchat lock accounts for adding friends?
Adding many people quickly is the most common spam pattern on Snapchat. New accounts that add in bursts, especially without a verified email and phone number, are the most likely to be locked.
