Why Did My Instagram Reach Drop Suddenly? 7 Causes and How to Check Each

When Instagram reach drops suddenly, it's usually one of seven things: your account or posts stopped being eligible for recommendation, you're reposting content Instagram now treats as unoriginal, your posts are getting less watch time and fewer shares, your activity tripped a restriction, you posted less or irregularly, you're comparing different metrics, or a viral post set a baseline you can't repeat. Most of these can be checked in a few minutes. Start with Account Status, then look at how many of your views come from non-followers.

This post goes through each cause in the order worth checking, and what to do about it.

First: is it followers or non-followers who stopped seeing you?

This one check narrows it down more than anything else. Open Insights on your professional account (or the professional dashboard) and look at a recent post's views split between followers and non-followers.

  • Non-follower views collapsed, follower views steady: Instagram stopped recommending you. Go to causes 1 and 2.
  • Both dropped: the content itself is landing worse, or you're posting less. Go to causes 3 and 5.
  • Only one post looks bad: that's normal variation, not a drop.

1. Your account isn't eligible for recommendation

This is the most common cause of a sudden drop, and the easiest to confirm. If your content breaks Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines, Instagram stops showing it to non-followers in Explore, Reels and suggestions.

How to check: Profile → menu → Settings and activity → Account Status. It says whether your content can be recommended and shows what's flagged.

What to do: remove or edit the flagged content, or tap Request a Review if it's a mistake. The full walkthrough is in Instagram "not eligible for recommendation".

2. You're posting content Instagram treats as unoriginal

Since April 30, 2026, accounts that mainly repost content they didn't create, or didn't meaningfully change, aren't recommended to non-followers anywhere on Instagram. Accounts built on reposts lost a lot of reach overnight.

How to check: look at your last month of posts. If most of it is other people's clips or photos with only small edits, this is likely the cause.

What to do: post your own content, or change reposts substantially with your own commentary, voiceover or editing. A watermark or a caption doesn't count.

3. Your posts are getting less watch time and fewer shares

Instagram ranks posts on how people respond to them: its ranking explainer describes predicting how likely people are to spend time on, like, comment on and share a post. Adam Mosseri has since named watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach as the signals that matter most, with shares in DMs especially important for reaching new people.

How to check: compare recent posts with older ones in Insights: average watch time, shares and saves per view. If those dropped, the reach followed.

What to do: hook viewers in the first second, keep reels tight, and make posts people want to send to a friend. Trial Reels are a low-risk way to test new formats: see trial reels not getting views. Collabs with bigger accounts in your niche also put your posts in front of new people: see Instagram collab posts.

4. Your activity tripped a restriction

A sudden jump in follows, likes, comments or DMs can get an account temporarily limited, and reach often drops with it. If you saw a "Try Again Later" message, that's a clear sign.

How to check: look for recent warnings in the app or in Account Status, and compare your activity this week with your usual pattern.

What to do: pause the action that was limited, then bring it back slowly. See what happens when you ignore the Try Again Later popup and how to prevent action blocks.

5. You posted less, or less regularly

Fewer posts means fewer chances to be shown, and an account that goes quiet for a while often takes a few posts to pick back up.

How to check: count your posts per week over the last two months.

What to do: get back to a steady rhythm. Several posts a week, every week, beats bursts.

6. You're comparing different numbers

On April 21, 2025, Instagram replaced Impressions and Plays with a single Views metric across reels, stories, photos and carousels. Comparing an old "plays" number with a new "views" number, or one tool's numbers with another's, can look like a drop that isn't there.

How to check: compare like with like: views to views, over the same length of time, in the same tool.

7. A viral post set an unrealistic baseline

If one post took off, every post after it looks like a drop. That's not a penalty, it's an outlier.

How to check: look at your median post over three months, not the best one.

What if none of these explain it?

Run a quick shadowban test with a second account that doesn't follow you: search for your username and a recent hashtag, and see whether your posts show up. Our guides on testing for an Instagram shadowban and shadow filtering vs shadowban go deeper.

How do you keep reach steady across several accounts?

Give each account original content, a steady posting rhythm and activity that grows slowly, and check each one regularly.

Onimator is software that drives the real Instagram app on Android phones, cloud phones and emulators, and IGBot is its Instagram module. These habits from its guides help keep reach stable:

Different, original content on every account. The same clip on twenty accounts is exactly what Instagram now demotes.

A steady posting schedule. The Post Scheduling Tool queues each account's posts ahead, so no account goes quiet.

Activity that ramps, not jumps. Use daily limits with auto-increment and hourly caps. See How to Warm Up Instagram Accounts at Scale.

Normal browsing between actions. Human Behaviour Emulation adds feed, stories and Explore activity.

A weekly Account Status check on every account, so a recommendation problem is caught in days, not months.

Instagram's terms don't allow automated use without permission. Automation carries risk, and nothing here removes it. What you control is how natural each account's activity looks.

FAQ

Why did my Instagram reach drop suddenly?

Most often because your content stopped being eligible for recommendation, you're reposting content Instagram treats as unoriginal, or your posts are getting less watch time and fewer shares. Check Account Status first, then compare views from followers and non-followers.

How do I know if Instagram stopped recommending my posts?

Open Account Status from Settings. It says whether your content can be recommended to non-followers. In Insights, a collapse in non-follower views while follower views hold steady points to the same thing.

Did Instagram change how views are counted?

Yes. On April 21, 2025, Instagram replaced Impressions and Plays with a single Views metric for all formats, so comparing old and new numbers can be misleading.

Does reposting other people's content hurt reach?

Yes. Since April 2026, accounts that mainly repost content they didn't create or meaningfully change aren't recommended to non-followers.

How long does it take for reach to come back?

Instagram doesn't give a timeline. Once the cause is fixed, such as flagged content removed or original posts going out regularly, reach usually recovers over the following weeks.
